AmeriCorps Opportunity with CRIS
The AmeriCorps State - OASHF HarvestCorps position is a one-year AmeriCorps State service program at Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS) that is supported by the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks (OASHF). The mission of OASHF is to assist Second Harvest Foodbanks in Ohio in providing food and other resources to people in need and to pursue areas of common interest for the benefit of people in need. OASHF sponsors the HarvestCorps program, a statewide AmeriCorps program in Ohio. OASHF's major initiative, the Ohio Benefit Bank, helps connect low-income individuals to work support programs like food stamps and the HEAP program as well as free tax preparation. Members also assist with capacity-building projects at food banks and other agencies. OASHF has been a leader strategically implementing AmericCorps resources to create a powerful anti-poverty public-private network that spans small and large community organizations, government agencies, and universities. As a HarvestCorps member, you are part of this network's mission to end hunger in Ohio.The AmeriCorps State - OASHF HarvestCorps member at Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS) will be responsible for assisting CRIS in responding to the unique needs of local refugee and immigrant communities. The member will serve as a counselor for the Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB), an online service that allows trained counselors to help connect low- and moderate-income families to public benefits such as food stamps and utility assistance and file their taxes for free. The member will also coordinate enrollment and participation in other community initiatives that alleviate poverty and ensure basic human needs.Qualified candidates are a high school graduate or GED recipient, able to pass a background check, a US Citizen or US national or lawful permanent resident, able to firmly commit to a one year program, passionate about poverty issues and helping their community, and proficient in basic workplace skills. The ideal candidate is a college graduate with experience, interest, and/or passion for working with immigrant and refugee communities. Program benefits through AmeriCorps include education award upon successful completion of service, health coverage, living allowance, and training.
