A fun new recipe to try in your kitchen!
The Somali Sambusa, is an all-time favorite in my home. It's a stuffed triangular pastry that is used commonly as an appetizer. Served not only during Ramadan, they come with all kinds of fillings, including dates, potatoes, beef and much more. For ingredients and directions: Ingredients
- Somali Pastry- this is created from scratch and is time consuming, however you can substitute it with a Tortilla Wrap (which is essentially the same thing.)
- 1 pound of ground beef/lamb
- 1 large onions, chopped
- 1 Green Pepper, chopped
- 1 clove of garlic
- 2 tablespoons of cilantro, finely chopped
- A dash of salt
- Jalapenos (if you enjoy Spicy)
- oil for frying---(or you can bake the sambusa)
For the flour paste
- 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup of water, or as needed
Directions:The filling
- Cook the meat in a skillet with some water on a medium heat.......... 15-20 minutes
- Once water has dissipated, add chopped onion, green peppers and jalapenos
- Stir with medium heat
- Then add the dash of salt (other spices may be added at this time)
- Continue to stir........................ 3 minutes
- Let filling cool
The Flour Paste
- In a small bowl, mix the flour and the water to make a smooth paste
The Pastry
- Pick one of the sambusa wrappers (tortilla wrap) and slice it into fourths
- Then with your hands pick one of the wrappers up and fold it into a cone shape
- Seal it with the flour paste
- Pinch edges so it is completely sealed
- Fill with a spoonful of filling and then close the pastry up
- Remember to seal off with the paste
*Repeat above Pastry steps until filling is done. Two Choices: you can either Fry your sambusa or bake it. My personal preference is baking, however frying is most popular.Frying!
- Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan
- Fry sambusas until golden brown
- Remove and lay on paper towels
- Serve while WARM!
ORBaking! You'll need 2 or more eggs depending on the amount of sambusas that you have on the baking sheet
- Beat the eggs in a smaill bowl
- Brush the tops of each sambusa with the egg
- Place sambusas in the oven, wait until tops are golden brown
- Once golden brown, flip sambusas and brush egg on the opposite side
- Place sambusas in the oven, wait until opposite side is golden brown
